When I was in high school, I had a crippling case of OCD. I couldn’t swallow, write, tie my shoes, turn off the lights, put on a shirt, shoot a basketball, or anything else without thinking to myself, "smart, good, alive, popular…etc". Anything to the contrary would mean something bad would happen

You might have been on to something there. If you think the opposite of that before you do anything, you’re almost guaranteed to fail. Anyway, congratulations for getting those compulsions behind you.
